Three young basketball players have been invited to trial for the South England Under-11 team in April.
Ten-year-olds Rhys Saunders, from All Saints C of E School in Didcot, and William Kent, from Marsh Gibbon C of E School in Bicester, impressed selectors so much the pair have been invited to a final selection session on April 8.
Eight-year-old Reeve Mahalingham, a pupil at Abingdon Preparatory School, was also asked to attend the April trials, but the Year 4 pupil is too young and will have to wait another year to compete at the Under-11 level.
The trio of South Oxfordshire Heat Basketball Club youngsters will be joined at the event by 25 other players from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Haeempshire.
The club’s trustees said: “One of our players [L.K. Mahalingham] was the only Oxfordshire-based player to be selected to play in the Under-11 National Tournament last season and Hustle [Kent] and Deadshot [Saunders] are continuing that basketball tradition.
“They have both been at almost every practice and their hard work in training and fighting spirit on the court has made the difference.
“The invitation to trial has only been extended to just over 20 players from the hundreds who play club basketball across four counties so it is a remarkable achievement to have made it this far.”
The South England team will play other UK regions in the National Tournament in June.
