Oxford’s exciting new retail centre Westgate has been pulling in the crowds not just with its shops but also with its variety of restaurants.
One which has certainly proved a popular place to eat in the few weeks it has been open is Pizza Pilgrims.
The restaurant is the first outside London for brothers Thom and James Elliot and combines classic Italian flavours with their signature colourful interiors.
Decked out in Pizza Pilgrims style of green and white checked tablecloths, a foosball table and classic arcade games there is also a parmesan photo booth and a Piaggio Ape van.
On to the main course – the food itself and the day we stopped by for lunch it was proving to be a very popular spot indeed.
The quirky interior reflects the lively busy atmosphere in which several dozen diners were eagerly tucking in.
We opted for two of our favourites – Salami and the Calzone Ripieno.
Renowned for their simple, high quality and traditional Neapolitan pizzas, all are made with authentic ingredients from Italy and cooked in pizza ovens running at 460C and cooked to perfection.
The Salami pizza is the best choice for meat lovers. Using authentic Neapolitan black pepper salami – this gives a real meat hit and boasted a delicious and light high crust.
The mozzarella was delightfully stringy and the salami gave enough of a punch without knocking you out.
The calzone is ever so slightly different from others you may have had. It is a still a folded pizza (the pizza equivalent of a Cornish pasty if you will) stuffed with glorious things like ricotta and salami – but it is also topped with Fior di Latte cow’s milk mozzarella and tomato sauce.
This is billed as the hungry person’s choice and having eaten it I think we’d agree with that – packed full of ingredients, there were some surprising flavours that we really enjoyed.
We chose a bottle of the house white which was light and fruity and a good accompaniment to the pizzas.
When in Rome as they say… so it was Tiramisu for me for dessert which was delicioulsy opulent, oozing cream and with a rich coffee and chocolate flavour.
Friendly helpful staff were a great finishing touch to this unique eating experience which we and no doubt many others will certainly be saying ‘ciao bella’ to again!
