Oxford United Women made the worst possible start to their FA Continental Tyres Cup campaign in a 4-0 thumping defeat at Birmingham City Ladies.
Three second half City goals brought an abrupt end to United’s unbeaten start to the 2017/18 season.
Lucy Quinn (54 minutes), Hayley Ladd (86) and Charlie Wellings (89) goals added to Freda Ayisi’s first half strike (38) as the Blues made light work of the U’s in the first group match last Wednesday.
Chloe Chivers was United’s biggest attacking threat, but she could only force Birmingham keeper Ann Katrin-Berger into a comfortable save before unleashing an audacious 35-yard shot which dropped narrowly over the bar.
The City breakthrough came just before half time when Ayisi cheekily back-heeled the ball into the net.
Taome Oliver went close for the Yellows but the Blues doubled their lead less than 10 minutes after half time when Quinn fired past Claire Skinner.
United defender Hannah Short received a straight red on the hour for a professional foul, but the hosts had to wait until the dying minutes to make their numerical advantage count.
Ladd converted from a corner and a low Wellings finish made it 4-0 and two goals in the final four minutes for the dominant home side.
The U’s also have Everton Ladies, Manchester City Women and Doncaster Rovers Belles in Group Two North.
