IVOR Novello Award-winning singer-songwriter Scott Matthews makes a return to Oxford playing songs from his new album.
Called The Great Untold, this record reflects his personal journey of marriage and soon-to-be fatherhood, his songs filled with new hopes and fears and new stories to tell.
Ahead of his gig at SJE Arts, in Iffley Road, Oxford, on May 15, Scott chatted to us about the album and tour.
The Great Untold is his sixth album and he continues to be inspired from “living my life” penning tunes about the good and the bad times. He started work on it in early 2017 finally recording tracks last November.
He said: “I’ve always found solace in the art of making music and I’ve only ever wanted the listener to hear a song of mine and to have the same feelings as I had when I wrote it.
“To share that connection is all the inspiration I need.”
Of the new album, Scott said picking a favourite track was difficult, but the opening single Cinnamon, released earlier this month, was high on the list.
He said: “I re-wrote the lyrics two days before the album was being mastered so it was all very chaotic at the 11th hour.
“Sometimes songs appear seemingly out of nowhere, fully formed as though they had been gestating for years in my subconscious. Cinnamon is one of those songs. It’s unexplainable and familiar, like it’s always been by my side just biding its time, waiting to meet its maker.”
Scott has been making music for 12 years – in 2003 he supported a friend’s band, The Other Smiths, three years later he was supporting the Foo Fighters. He signed to Island Records in 2006.
He said: “Those early days were quite the rollercoaster. I feel very fortunate in many respects and have highly treasured memories from playing all over the world.
“I was lucky enough to win an Ivor Novello award for my first single Elusive too. Since then I’ve been trying to catch up with Paul McCartney as he has 19 Ivor Novellos.”
Scott has performed in the city many times and is “excited” about his first gig at SJE Arts.
