An Oxfordshire rider landed a top title at the British Showjumping Spring Championships 2018 earlier this month.
Oliver Fletcher, from Faringdon, became the Winter 1.35m Champion with Graham Fletcher’s 15-year-old bay gelding, Caicos.
Oliver, 15, picked up the title with the sole jump-off clear in the final draw at the showjumping championship held at Addington Manor, Buckingham.
Fences fell with alarming regularity as riders chased the handsome £1,500 first prize, but it was Oliver, the youngest in the class, who produced a penalty-free round to take home the glory.
Oliver said: “There is more pressure to jump clear than to go against the clock and chase a target, but pressure brings out the best in me, it makes me ride better.”
Caicos previously evented with Paul Tapner before turning to showjumping and was ridden by Alfie Bradstock until Oliver took over in September last year.
Oliver added: “He has all the scope in the world, has the right mentality and wants to do the job.
“I rode him for an hour this morning. In the first, the first three jumps I need lots of leg, after that, no leg at all.”
Nine of 21 starters posted first round clears over the 12-fence track designed by London 2012 course designers Bob Ellis and Nigel Jess.
