A Cherwell cat rescue service felt “overwhelmed” after it received more than 200 parcels following a social media appeal for donations shared by comedian Ricky Gervais.
Burglars ransacked the Cherwell Cats Protection’s storage in Bicester in late December stealing almost all of the cat food and leaving only empty boxes behind.
But a tweet shared by the star of The Office and Extras via his own cat’s Twitter profile resulted in hundreds of parcels from all over the world being donated to the Oxfordshire charity.
Ollie, @myleftfang on Twitter, has almost 40,000 followers who have contributed to the 224 donations sent to the cat rehoming facility.
Cherwell Cats Protection took to Facebook to thank those who ordered items from its Amazon wish list.
“We are feeling extremely overwhelmed by the huge amounts of generosity we have received from each and every person in our community and beyond (as far as the USA),” it said.
“We only put a post out there to make people aware of what happened to us – but the response could not have been further away from what we had expected.”
