Oxford United Ladies were on the wrong end of an FA Cup fourth round upset as they lost on penalties to Cardiff City Ladies on Sunday.
The U’s were held to a 0-0 draw after extra time and the Welsh side, who play in the tier below in the WPL Southern Division, progressed with the 5-4 shootout victory.
United set the tempo from the off and dominated the early stages.
Kayleigh Hines fired well over with the first effort of the match before Emily Allen was thwarted by Estelle Randall in the Cardiff goal.
Both sides had their chances in the first half – Cori Williams went closest for the Bluebirds – but it remained goalless at the break.
Oxford came out firing again in the second period but were left frustrated by the impressive Randall.
Taome Oliver forced the keeper into a big save and Hannah Short crashed a header off the post when the stopper was finally beaten for the first time.
The best moment of the match came 10 minutes from time when Oliver, with the goal gaping, was again foiled by arguably the save of the season from Randall.
So extra time it was and Cardiff began to dominate.
Chloe O’Connor, Jemma Heath and Cori Williams could have easily won it for Cardiff.
Oliver went close again when she struck the bar in the dying moments, but this one was settled on penalties.
Emily Poole converted the Welsh side’s winner.
