Oxford’s Raise and Give (RAG) charity Jailbreak is back this year, with students embarking on a trip of a lifetime armed with no money, tickets, or passes, and just 36 hours to get as far away from Oxford as possible.
Two of the students taking on this year’s Jailbreak are Eleanor Holt and Chevonne van Rhee, both third year Oxford University students.
With the countdown being on just two days, the ‘Jailbreak’ challenge is set to begin at 6am this Saturday, with a goal to get as far away from Oxford as possible by 6pm on Sunday.
The aim is to reach Oxford, New Zealand, 11,771 miles away, whilst spending no money on travel.
The duo are also hoping to raise £100,000 in sponsorship, with all of the proceedings going straight to charity and half of the cash going to charities based in Oxford.
The charities to receive the donations are Oxford Homeless Pathways, Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis, Student Minds, and the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative.
They said: “We are inspired by the work of these charities, and think they are hugely deserving of your support.
“Obviously these are quite big targets, so at the moment we are trying to raise as much awareness as possible and to reach out to the maximum number of potential sponsors.
“We think it’s a fantastic (and pretty unusual) opportunity to raise money and much-needed awareness for four really deserving charities, so at the moment we’re mostly excited, if a little apprehensive about the size of the challenge we’ve set ourselves!
“But we think getting even close to those goals would be really worthwhile.”
The charitable pair will be updating their Facebook and Twitter pages for people to follow their progress along the journey.
Jailbreak is RAG’s biggest event of the year, with past students reaching all over the UK, Europe, and beyond, from Poland to Budapest to Istanbul, to Tokyo and South Africa.
Last year the charity smashed a total fundraiser of over £30,000.
Oxford RAG is Oxford University Student Union’s fundraising team.
Year on year they’ve hosted sporting tournaments, hitch-hikes, talent shows, bungee jumping, street collections in fancy dress and the RAG Ball.
