Children picked up a plectrum for the first time as the next generation of young musicians joined in a national campaign offering free music lessons.
PMT Oxford, on Cowley Road, hosted non-stop free music sessions on Saturday afternoon as families took part in Learn to Play Day to start the budding careers of the next Radiohead, Supergrass or Foals.
Children had the bases covered as they played pop classics such as Firework by Katy Perry and Don’t Stop Believing by Journey under the tutelage of Rock Steady Music tutor Jamie Alexander.
Jamie said: “We had a great mix of children, some of whom had never played an instrument before and some who were already learning, but either way they were all eager to get up and play in a band with their peers.
“It was interesting hearing from both the children and parents about what they already knew about the instruments, what they wanted to learn and what sort of music they enjoyed.
“Some children who were learning one instrument even had a go on a different one to try something new, and that’s ultimately what the day was all about; getting up and having a go.”
