Building work on a new state-of-the-art clinic will begin this spring as the county’s largest hospice launches a campaign to fund its first room.
The expansion of Sobell House, based at the Churchill Hospital, will allow more people facing the end of their life to have access to specialist palliative care when they need it.
Building one room in the new clinic will cost £50,000 and the hospice is hoping this year’s Moonlight Stroll event – its 12th annual fundraiser – will be one of its biggest to date.
Hundreds of night time walkers are being encouraged to don big hair, loud clothing and even dig out their old Walkman as this year’s theme goes all 1980s.
The stroll might not be until June 23 but, officially launched last month, the appeal has already received the backing of 80s icon Tony Hadley.
The former Spandau Ballet frontman has encouraged everyone to get their funky 80s attire on and enjoy the nine-mile walk.
He said: “Back in the New Romantic period we wanted to be different, we used to enjoy surprising and shocking people with what we wore.
“We wanted to make a statement and get people to look at us. That’s my challenge to all you 80s fans out there – get your New Romantic gear out and join the walk.”
The 57-year-old added: “The wonderful work that Sobell House Hospice does makes a true and significant difference to the lives of families affected by life-limiting and terminal illness.
“The team creates some wonderful and lasting memories for the families who need this vital hospice care service.”
Kevin Game, a fundraiser at Sobell House, has organised all 12 Moonlight Stroll events.
He said there are 1,000 places available and that this year’s target is a whopping £100,000.
Sobell House is in the third year of a four-year plan to invest £9million to grow its service, £5million of which has already been raised.
Overall, the multi-million pound investment is funding an expansion of hospice care throughout the county in Oxfordshire’s four main hospitals.
The additional £4million is sought through community fundraising, corporate support and its charity shops.
