The season end cannot come quick enough for Oxford United Women after losing their eighth game in nine with a 2-1 defeat at home to basement club Watford Ladies.
To compound United’s misery, the away side’s win was their first of the season.
Yet struggling Oxford started well, taking the lead at Court Place Farm after 15 minutes.
The breakthrough in United’s final home game of the season came when Ellie Noble’s fierce strike cannoned off the crossbar before hitting the Hornets’ goalkeeper and crossing the line.
But that was as good as it got for Oxford, who were pegged back just two minutes later, the experienced Helen Ward beating Demi Lambourne with a well-placed effort from just outside the box.
The chances came thick and fast in the second half and it was Watford who got the all-important goal just after the hour mark.
Simona Petkova converted a Ward cross from the right for the winner.
United had their chances to snatch a point – Chloe Chivers and Georgia Timms both went close – but the Watford players put their bodies on the line to secure their first win of the season.
Oxford end their WSL2 season at champions Doncaster Rovers Belles on Sunday.
