Here at the Oxfordshire Guardian and The Oxford Paper we are calling on our readers and partners to nominate inspiring charities to help us choose our Charity of the Year for 2018.
Oxfordshire has no shortage of admirable good causes and we are welcoming nominations until January 31, when we will then decide which charity we should back for the year.
Choices can be based on anything; from personal experiences or friends’ experiences, to liking the sound of the work they do or relevance to current issues across the county.
We are looking to publicise the work of a charity through the production of engaging material for our readers to be featured on at least a monthly basis.
So if you know of a charity that deserves greater recognition please do get in touch.
Group editor Karen Neville said: “There are so many worthy charities around the county doing so much good work often with very little publicity or recognition, what we are aiming to do is give them a helping hand by promoting their work in the community.
“Most people have a cause that is dear to their heart for a particular reason and we want to hear about it, so please do get in touch.”
Didcot-based fundraising group Play2Give was our Charity of the Year for 2017 and, together, we helped raise nearly £20,000 – almost double founder Andy Baker’s £10,000 target for the group’s 10th anniversary.
Karen added: “Play2Give is a terrific example of the work that can be done to help people and we hope this year’s charity can go on to achieve the success they have experienced.”
Andy, 29, said: “The partnership with this paper was for us hugely beneficial. When we set out with this paper’s help with our £10k in 10 appeal we never dreamt we would raise £19,630 by the end of the year so the partnership proved immensely beneficial.
“We thank the staff who also threw themselves into raising funds such as reporter George with a half marathon and the production manager’s (Peter Herring) skydive.
“2017 was the most successful year for Play2Give ever, and we think part of that was thanks to the paper for helping make our milestone year extra special.”
