Bicester and North Oxford Cricket Club’s long winning streak came to an end at the weekend.
They succumbed to a 71-run defeat at Wolvercote Town in their opening Cherwell League, having not experienced defeat since 2015.
BNOCC went unbeaten during their promotion season from Division 4 last time out but this was a stark reminder of the challenges that face them in Division 3 where they crumbled dramatically in pursuit of 169.
The hosts’ top and middle order batsmen struggled to get to grips with the bowling of Dan Savin (3-30), Chris de Kock (4-64) and debutant Andy Godbold (3-30) who tore into them.
Some Wolvercote resistance was provided by Aky Hussain (14) and Ahsan Malik (28) and there was further frustration for the Bicester bowlers caused by Michael Yates (39) and number 10 Haroon Malik (41).
Bicester went into the mid-innings break confident they could chase 169 but could muster little resistance.
Nick Moorman went first for 11, closely followed by Alistair Gibbins for 14. Skipper Ryan Moore could only watch as BNOCC capitulated, losing Rob Humphreys, Warwick Bradfield and Danny Clark all for ducks.
Oliver Ward (13) and Moore (24) provided brief stability and Moore and de Kock appeared to have blunted the Wolvercote attack.
But once the captain fell, that was pretty much it. All out for 98.
