DAN Savin’s all-round heroics for Bicester and North Oxford Cricket Club (BNOCC) were all in vain as they lost by six runs at home to Horley.
His innings of 90 saw BNOCC enter the final over of the game just 10 away from the target of 241, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Earlier, after Horley had won the toss and elected to bat, Savin’s opening burst of 4-29 had reduced them to 31-4 but thanks to David Clark (104), the visitors recovered.
The Horley tail wagged with cameos from David Eaton (28), Steve Palmer (15) and Jamie Abbotts (15) getting them to a par score.
In reply, openers Matt Collins (19) and Olly Ward (28) got Bicester off to a solid start with a first wicket partnership of 48. However, this was abruptly broken when Horley took three wickets without Bicester advancing the score, leaving them 48-3.
Savin and Ryan Moore (26) took the total towards 100 but Moore was stumped and Chris de Kock fell shortly after for six.
Graham Savin joined his son at the crease with BNOCC still requiring 117 off 18 overs. Father and son put together a partnership of 78 before Savin senior was caught behind off the bowling of Jamie Abbotts for 36.
Wickets continued to fall and last man Lewis Moore joined Savin junior out in the middle with 16 needed from 11 balls.
After some good running between the wickets, BNOCC narrowed this down to them needing seven from four. However in trying to hit a short ball from Abbotts, Savin got a bottom edge and the ball removed the bails, leaving BNOCC devastated.
