Tom Butler was the hero for Wantage as they overcame 10-man Reading Town to win 1-0 at Alfredian Park in a wind-affected match on Monday.
The game sprang to life early in the second half, when Reading ‘keeper Oneal Garnes was shown a straight red for upending Richard Claydon, who had pushed the ball past him.
Town’s skipper Danny Lingwood donned the gloves and took up his position between the posts. He saved the resultant Claydon free kick, but only succeeded in diverting it to Tom Butler, who tapped home from close range.
Reading nearly stole a point two minutes from time, but were denied when Wantage keeper Gareth Tucker saved well from Graham Lewis as the hosts clung on.
